Instructions for installation, disassemble and rekeying of different types of common residential locks for people who have no locksmith knowledge, experience or reluctance to pay a professional.
Key lockable knob style and lever style entrance lock-sets fitting, installation and rekey methods.
These style of lockable locks most common on residential front, rear, laundry and garage doors. Non keyed versions of these locks referred to as passage sets or privacy sets are used on bedroom or toilet doors and have the ability to provide a simple privacy function via a push or turn button snib on the inside of the door lock. It can be released in an emergency with a coin or screwdriver by turning the safety release mechanism on the outside of the external handle.
Installation is usually a 54mm hole for the mechanism and a 25mm hole for the latch. The usual backset for these latches is 60mm. A 22mm hole for the strike allows the latch to extend correctly. After holes are drilled, attach lock to door and secure with supplied screws. Attach strike plate and adjust to eliminate binding.
The method to disassemble, rekey and reassemble entrance knob-set locks is as follows:
1) Lock must be unlocked and the external handle should operate as intended. If no keys are available the lock cylinder must first be picked open and where possible allow the barrel to remain in an unlocked position to allow for removal.
2) Turn external handle to allow access to retaining pin hole. Depress retaining pin with appropriate tool and remove handle from lock body.
3) Remove cylinder from handle and detach cam from barrel. Remove retaining clip or circlip from rear of lock cylinder.
4) Slide barrel out of cylinder housing with removal tool and shim if required.
5) Decode barrel bottom pins or decode original key and record codes.
6) Cut new keys based on correct re-coding methods, cylinder balancing and correct theory.
7) Re-pin barrel and balance upper chambers.
8) Insert key and re-pinned barrel into cylinder housing and check for smooth operation.
9) Correct binding with correct pin usage, check key space and depth matches pin sizes or reaming barrel chamber with appropriate tools.
10) Lubricate with graphite or silicon based lubricant and reassemble lock in reverse order as described.

Deadlocks and Deadlatches fitting, installation and rekey methods.
Deadlocks are a more robust method of securing external access doors either as a stand alone lock or used in conjunction with existing installations. Both these heavy duty style of locks are operated externally via a common 201 style cylinder with escutcheon and attached through the door via an adjustable tailpiece that connects to a cam within the lock body.
A deadlock operates only while the door is closed. A bolt engages the strike plate attached to the door frame and prevents the door from opening. Original versions of deadlock only had an internal snib to lock/ unlock.
Later models have keyed cylinder only to allow proper key operated deadlocking or a large snib to allow locking internally without a key but a key cylinder included inside the snib to be able to properly deadlock the lock if required.
A deadlock is installed at a height between 900mm to 1200mm using a 54mm hole saw at a common backset of 60mm. The latch body hole is 25mm and extends into the main lock hole drilled in the door stile. A 22mm hole is drilled for the latch bolt in the door frame and the metal strike is fitted for extra strength and cosmetic appearance.
Deadlatches work in a similar method as deadlocks but redesigning the lock to have a spring loaded latch allows the lock to be closed behind you while leaving the property without the need of a key to lock the mechanism.
Current generation of deadlatches have a safety release inside the internal snib that disengages the deadlocking function when the lock is unlocked from the outside. This function stops the lock from locking a person inside a property if the keys are left in the lock, forgotten outside or a wind gust. A new design change also allows the disengagement of the internal snib if it was key locked when exiting the property. When a key is inserted and turned in the external cylinder, it disengages via a internal cam the internal snib.
Installation is usually simple as only a 32mm hole is required for the cylinder as the lock body mechanism is mounted on the internal side of the door. Referred to as a rim mounted lock. The backing plate of the lock has screw holes to attach to the external cylinder and well as a hole for the lock cam and tailpiece. When the backing plate is mounted to the cylinder, additional screws are required to fix the plate securely to the door timber. The lock body itself clips over this backing plate and is secured with lock body screws on the latching side.
A chisel, mallet and cordless screwdriver is used to fit the strike. The strike is cut into the door frame and a high strength fixing plate is secured to the frame and internal timbers with a extra long fixing screws. These screws help with a forced attack on the door through kicking or body force.
The method to disassemble, rekey and reassemble deadlocks and deadlatches is as follows:
1) Lock must be unlocked and the lock should operate as intended. If no keys are available the lock cylinder must first be picked open and where possible allow the barrel to remain in an unlocked position to allow for removal.
2) Remove lock body, backing plate, cylinder retaining screws and cylinder from door.
3) Remove cylinder cam from 201 cylinder barrel. Unscrew cam retaining screws or circlip from rear of lock body internal barrel.
4) Slide barrels out of cylinder housings and lock body with lock picks, original keys, removal tool and shim if required.

Removal, rekeying and installation of Gainsborough Tri-lock locks and Gainsborough TE2 profile cylinders.
Tri-locks are an expensive and internally complex residential orientated all in one lock style available in a lever handle or a knob style handle. Installation is simple by following the complex instructions and using the template provided. These locks a a favourite of locksmiths and many laughs and good times have been had repairing their reliable components. Gainsboroughs spare parts department are an immensely helpful resource. The frequent design changes are a wonderful way of explaining to a customer that their replacement lock is bigger than before so is much better and easily adapted to the door. The extra labour costs are amusing to both parties.
The tri lock cylinder is easily removed from the door by dismantling everything and chasing the spindle spring as it happily vanishes into a garden bed or long grass. Reassembly can be done while blindfolded and drunk.
Highly recommended for the home handyman who just watched a youtube video.

Removal, rekeying and installation of lockable window winder locks, sliding window locks and lockable multibolt or patio bolt locks. These locks use a wafer style barrel and require the correct rekeying kit.
Window locks come in many styles to work with the different designs required in modern homes.
Awning windows usually use a lockable winder lock that uses a key to unlock and a push button on the lock body tp lock the window shut from the inside. These lock need to be removed from the sill and the barrel removed via a retaining clip located inside the lock at the rear of the barrel. A wafer kit is required to rekey these locks. Some versions use a C4 profile to match with the house door keys for convenience. Older versions use a smaller LF profile key. Sliding window locks are fitted to the aluminium frame of the window and have a push button snib to fix the frame in a locked closed or slightly open position for ventilation. It is usually more cost effective to buy these locks keyed alike from the retailer to save costs. Lockable bolts like the multi bolt or more common patio bolts secure more obscure types of applications. Multibolts can secure awning, side awning, flyscreenless windows, sash windows and small utility doors etc. Patio bolts a an excellent option to deadbolt a timber or sliding aluminium door from the inside and added security to bi fold doors or open out doors with basic locks installed. Commercial grade lockable bolts like ADI bolts are wildly used to secure shop and factory doors.
